Valour IT

It Begins…

Dear Mom...

Wounded Warriors connect with Voice Activated Laptops

What is Valour-IT?

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss, helps provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptop computers and other technology to support Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand wounds and other severe injuries.  Technology supplied includes:

Voice-controlled Laptops – Operated by speaking into a microphone or using other adaptive technologies, they allow the wounded to maintain connections with the rest of the world during recovery.
Wii Video Game Systems – Whole-body game systems increase motivation and speed recovery when used under the guidance of physical therapists in therapy sessions (donated only to medical facilities).
Personal GPS – Handheld GPS devices build self-confidence and independence by compensating for short-term memory loss and organizational challenges related to severe TBI and severe PTSD.

Each year, just before Veterans Day, bloggers, both  military and military  supporters, band together to raise money to support this worthy cause. Teams are divided up according to military branch (GO MARINES) and the goal is to see who can raise the most money (15,000$ per branch, this year) (GO MARINES).

You can donate by going to this link:    Soldiers’ Angels Project Valour-IT

Last night, during my weekly visits, I was greeted by…our latest laptop recipient, with a quick little dance.  I think he even clicked his heels!  He is so terribly happy to have received a laptop and is really looking forward to having Joe show him all the in’s and outs.  You made this Sergeant-Major, who has served faithfully for 40 years and is as crusty as they come, do a happy dance in the lobby – PRICELESS! – Soldiers’ Angel Monica, November 2009

Widgets and blog links will be up as soon as I get them. Also, cruise on over the the auctions at You Served and see what goodies are up on the block to support Valour-IT and our Wounded Warriors. (I just looked and there are currently no items listed, but I know some really cool stuff has been offered up. Keep checking!!  GO MARINES!!! (Have I already said that?)

Who Are They?

The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his
country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father’s, but he has never collected unemployment either.

He’s a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and a 155mm howitzer.

He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.. He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must.

He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional.
He can march until he is told to stop, or stop until he is told to march.
He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without
spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient.

He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts.

If you’re thirsty, he’ll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his
food. He’ll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life – or take it, because that is his job.
He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay, and
still find ironic humor in it all.

He has seen more suffering and death than he should have in his short
lifetime. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed.

He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to ‘square-away ‘those around him who haven’t bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out, far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful.

Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying
the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the
American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood.

And now we even have women over there in danger, doing their part in this tradition of going to War when our nation calls us to do so. As you go to bed tonight, remember this shot. . .
A short lull, a little shade and a picture of loved ones in their helmets.

These are the men and women who protect our country.  They are your sons and daughters, husbands, and wives, friends,  and neighbors. Say a prayer for them, if you are so inclined. And, DONATE a few dollars to Valour IT to help out the ones in need of our help, when they come home.

H/T to Wolff for the bulk of the above post.

What if…

What if you woke up today and…

You didn’t know where you were…

You didn’t know what happened to you…

You couldn’t use your hands….

You couldn’t do anything for yourself…

This is the new reality that many of our Wounded Warriors wake up to.  In one instant, their independence, and mobility has been taken away.  Their support structure is gone and replaced with a strange new world. It is extremely important, to aid in recovery and rehabilitation, that as much of the freedom and independence that has been taken away, be restored.  These men and women have the drive and the grit to recover as fully as possible and Valour-IT seeks to give them the tools to help do that.

Donate to the MARINE TEAM TODAY!!! Every penny we raise, goes directly to purchase equipment and software for these Warriors.  They have given a lot – can’t you give just a little?

Paid for in Blood – LCPL Nicholas S. Perez

Miss Ladybug has a story for the day.

Our freedom was bought with blood, we should cherish it and remember the ones who paid for it.

Remember, the Valour-IT fund raiser runs through Nov. 11. The Marine team has raised over $11,000 since Monday.  Every penny of this  money will go towards providing our Wounded Warriors with voice activated laptops and other adaptive electronic equipoment to aid their recovery. Every  dollar helps!!
